America’s FoundersA recreation of John Trumbull’s Declaration of Independence painting. The book depicted in Trumbull’s original painting next to the Declaration of Independence is assumed to be the Bible. However, no record exists verifying this.

GalileoTried and convicted of heresy by the Roman Catholic church in the 1600s due to his revolutionary views on science and astronomy and the interpretation of the Bible, Galileo firmly believed that his views were not contrary to the biblical texts.

American Civil WarBible societies in the North and South provided Bibles to soldiers on both sides to carry with them into battle. There are confirmed stories of Northern and Southern soldiers’ lives being saved when their Bibles stopped bullets.

The MayflowerThis Mayflower scene depicts a family on the quest to start a new life, one free from religious persecution. Passengers most likely carried a Geneva Bible on this perilous voyage.

Abraham LincolnLincoln experienced anguish as he lamented the struggle between the North and the South. Toward the end of the war, Lincoln noted, “Both read the same Bible and pray to the same God, and each invokes His aid against the other.” He called the war-torn nation to seek peace: “With malice toward none, with charity for all . . . let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds . . . to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

Gutenberg PressAround 1450, Johannes Gutenberg began developing new techniques for improving the printing press. He created movable metal type which meant that letters could be rearranged into countless patterns, which was faster and more accurate than any previous method. Gutenberg’s first major project was printing the Bible in Latin around 1454, today known as the Gutenberg Bible. Gutenberg’s innovations made books, including the Bible, more available to a wider range of people than ever before.

Martin LutherMartin Luther wrote his Ninety-Five Theses in October 1517, an act which helped launch the Protestant Reformation. A later story claims Martin Luther nailed a copy of the Ninety-Five Theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg.

The ScriptoriumScriptorium is a Latin word meaning “place for writing,” a place where scribes and illuminators would copy and ornament texts and scrolls. Our scriptorium set is modeled after several scriptoriums in and around Jerusalem found by archaeologists.

The RedcoatThe Redcoat reminds us of the tumultuous era of the American Revolution. Ministers in the American colonies used the Bible to encourage both resistance and loyalty to the British crown.

The Dead Sea ScrollsEast of Jerusalem in the caves at Qumran, ancient Hebrew scrolls we found stored in jars. Today we know them as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
